Mauricio Anton pictures from Logatham

Nigel / Gemma,

here are some pictures by Mauricio Anton of the Miocene fauna from the site of Logatham, west of Lake Turkana in Northern Kenya. The fossil material dates to 4-8 million years ago.... so is broadly similar to a lot of the Abu Dhabi material. Especially take a look at the last three pictures in the following list.

They are taken from this book:

Meave G. Leakey and John M. Harris (eds.). 2003. Logatham - The Dawn of Humanity in Eastern Africa. Columbia University Press, New York. ISBN 0-231-11870-8.

Thought they might help you a bit with the artwork for the Abu Dhabi Late Miocene picture.

Here also is a pdf file which has the notes prepared by Mauricio Anton about his illustrations:

Appendix: Notes on the Reconstructions of Fossil Vertebrates from Logatham - Mauricio Anton (544 Kb)

Mauricio Anton pictures:

crocs-fig4-14a.jpg (81 Kb).... the top croc, Crocodylus niloticus, is the same as Abu Dhabi ones.
crocs-fig4-14b.jpg (112 Kb).... again the top picture is similar to Abu Dhabi ones.

cercopithecid-fig6-1.jpg (98 Kb) ....
hominidae-fig6-15.jpg (133 Kb).....

hyaenidae-fig7-20.jpg (82 Kb).....

stegotetrabelodon-fig8-1.jpg (105 Kb)..... our model which Abdul Hafeez is quite close to this, although I prefer our model to this drawing which has the lower tusks too long, and looks too much like the body of a modern African elephant.

deinotherium-fig8-11.jpg (164 Kb).....

rhino-fig9-1.jpg (167 Kb).....

hipparion-fig9-6.jpg (143 Kb).....
hipparion-fig9-8.jpg (160 Kb).....

hippo-fig10-1.jpg (144 Kb).....
hippo-fig10-28.jpg (122 Kb).....

suidae-fig10.42.jpg (152 Kb).....
suidae-fig10.47.jpg (119 Kb).....
suidae-fig10.49.jpg (149 Kb).....

giraffid-fig11-1.jpg (191 Kb).....
bovidae-fig11-5.jpg (77 Kb).... we definitely have Tragoportax in the Abu Dhabi material (pictures B+C).

nawata-sm-fig13-1.jpg (164 Kb) ..... I like this picture with the croc snapping at the antelope.... would be good to include something similar in ours.... also perhaps an examples with crocs snapping on a turtle (as we have bone taphonomic evidence for this).

apak-sm-fig13-14.jpg (145 Kb).... nice pictures of Deinotherium and Stegotetrabelodon in distance (although = error in case of Stegotetrabelodon as the animals depicted here only seem to have 2 tusks instead of 4!).

kaiyumung-sm-fig13-15.jpg
(133 Kb)... nice picture of Cerpithocid apes with rhino and suids to the rear of picture.
