Tanya Atkinson joined ADIAS on a temporary
contract to provide assistance with ongoing work on the ADIAS sites
database, GIS system and mapping.
8 May 2003
Updated the design of the
website home page. The site is now a no-frames site. This simplifies
access to the contents of the website. All the ADIAS newsletters can
now be downloaded from the newsletter page. New
details have been added to the ADIAS team page in the
form of photographs, web links and email addresses. There is now a new
section of the website called Projects, which provides
links to images and reports of ongoing work by ADIAS.

Added new page with a compilation of pictures of Miocene
proboscids, which we are using to help build
a model of Stegotetrabelodon syrticus, the Late Miocene elephant
which once lived in Abu Dhabi 6-8 million years ago. This is
being built in collaboration with Abdul Hafeez
Aziz and his team, with consultation from Dr. Mark Beech, Will Higgs and Nigel Larkin.

Added details of a new publication to the ADIAS publications page
- Proceedings of the First International Conference on the Archaeology
of the United Arab Emirates. The volume is co-edited by ADIAS Executive
Director, Peter Hellyer, and features eight papers by ADIAS team members
highlighting some of the recent research we have carried out. For more

17-19 July 2003
ADIAS staff (Peter Hellyer and Dr. Mark Beech) and associates (Dr.
Rob Carter, Vincent Charpentier, and Dr. Heiko Kallweit) presented papers
about ADIAS work at the Seminar
for Arabian Studies, held at the British Museum in London.
On Friday 18th July there was the official launch of the publication
of the Proceedings of the First International Conference on the Archaeology
of the United Arab Emirates at a reception hosted by the Seminar
for Arabian Studies and Trident

Dr. Mark Beech and Karen Cooper from ADIAS make a visit to Muscat, Sultanate
of Oman. During the visit they met representatives from the Ministry
of National Heritage and Culture, the Natural History Museum,
the Department
of Archaeology at Sultan Qaboos
University, and the Bait
Al Zubair Museum.

Dr. Mark Beech
gave a lecture entitled "Recent Palaeontological and Archaeological
Discoveries in Abu Dhabi" to the Historical Association of Oman
in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

to ADIAS: a News from Abu
Dhabi page has been added to the Department of Archaeology website
at the University of York, and
the Department of Art and Archaeology

Dr. Mark Beech gave a lecture to the
Emirates Natural History Group at the Cultural Foundation
in Abu Dhabi from 8-9.30 p.m. The lecture was entitled "Elephants in
the Desert: discovery of a new Late Miocene fossil site at Ruwais, Western
Region of Abu Dhabi".

Emirate: a palaeontological and archaeological perspective".

Added new web page about the building
of the scale model of a 'Stegotetrabelodon syrticus', a primitive
4-tusked elephant which lived in Abu Dhabi some 6-8 million years ago.
This model is being built by Abdul and Izhar Hafeez from the Private
Department, and will form part of an exhibition of Miocene fossils due
to be held in Abu Dhabi early in 2004.

Anniversary of the First Crude Oil Shipment from Abu Dhabi gala celebration,
which was held at the Hiltonia Garden Arena in Abu Dhabi.

The new
book by ADIAS on the Late Islamic period sulphur mines at Jebel Dhanna
was officially launched at the "40th Anniversary of the First Crude
Oil Shipment from Abu Dhabi" reception, which was held at the Jebel
Dhanna refinery. A copy of the book was presented to His Excellency
Yousef Omair Bin Yousef, Secretary-General of the Supreme Petroleum Council
and Chief Executive Officer of ADNOC
by Peter Hellyer (ADIAS
Executive Director), Dr Mark Beech (ADIAS Senior Resident Archaeologist)
and Simon Aspinall (ADIAS Environmental Studies Unit Director).
